In celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month, the library has teamed up with artists from Radiate Art Space to offer children a fun opportunity to make Guatemalan-inspired worry dolls. Worry dolls, also known as muñecas quitapenas in Spanish, are small, colorful dolls that originated in the highlands of Guatemala. The tradition originates from a Mayan legend about a princess named Ixmucane, blessed by the Sun God with the ability to solve human problems. In honor of this gift, people have been traditionally making these tiny, handmade dolls as representations of Ixmucane. According to the legend: Before bed, tell your worries to the dolls and then place them under your pillow, so they will take the worries away by morning.
Our dolls will be made from pipe cleaners, yarn, beads, and fabric.
Youth ages 4–10 are welcome to join us for this creative experience. Please register in advance by calling or emailing the library: (802-434-3036 / library@richmondvt.gov).
