Join Richmond author and educator Tyler Alexander for a talk, discussion, and signing of his new book, If I Can Get Home This Fall: A Story of Love, Loss, and a Cause in the Civil War.
Alexander's book tells the story of Dan Mason, a soldier from Glover, VT, and features a collection of remarkably eloquent letters written to his sweetheart back home. Mason served in the famous Vermont Brigade before becoming an officer in a Black regiment, the 19th US Colored Troops.
Weaving together intimate details about the experiences of ordinary men and women from Vermont with the larger military and political context of the time, Alexander's talk will highlight what the war meant to those who lived through it, especially to a young man and woman from northeastern Vermont whose lives would never be the same.
Books will be available for purchase.
