Three years ago, Lisa Sylvester faced a high risk of developing breast cancer. To manage that risk, she chose a prophylactic mastectomy. When healthcare providers suggested implants to "put herself back together," Lisa decided to go flat instead. This decision opened her eyes to a persistent stigma: Aesthetic Flat Closure, the term for going flat, is not routinely offered, often discouraged, and poorly understood.
Motivated by her experience and the stories of others, Lisa created STILL, a groundbreaking advocacy project that redefines perceptions around women’s bodies post-mastectomy. Through powerful photography, storytelling, and design, STILL amplifies the voices of those who choose to go flat and challenges societal norms, inspiring all to embrace their authentic selves.
In this presentation, Lisa shares her personal story, the challenges women face around going flat, how STILL was created—and the impact the project has had in one short year. Spoiler alert, it’s gained global interest!
